SAGE Research Methods Datasets launched to teach research methods through practice

Los Angeles, CA (June 18, 2015) SAGE today announces the launch of SAGE Research Methods Datasets, a new resource that supports the teaching and independent learning of quantitative and qualitative analytical methods used in the social sciences. Using real-world data from around the world accompanied by step-by-step instructions, this resource teaches statistical and analytical techniques used in Business, Education, Health, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology, among other disciplines.

SAGE Research Methods Datasets was designed to save time for research methods teaching faculty looking for teaching datasets and to support graduate students learning methods on their own. Each dataset comes with an explanation of the analytical approach, an example to demonstrate the method, and a review to reinforce the material. SAGE white paper explores discoverability of scholarly content, recommends standards, transparency, metadata, and partnerships

Los Angeles, CA (January 16, 2014)   In a changing academic environment, discoverability of scholarly content demands cooperative efforts across the communications supply chain. A new SAGE white paper, out today, summarizes the current discovery landscape for scholarly communications, advocates for cooperative efforts across the industry, and proposes specific recommendations for discoverability improvement for librarians, publishers, and service providers.

“This white paper draws upon novel insights contributed by international experts about the scholarly ecosystem of publisher content, research tools, and library systems. Library value in the developing world, new study published

SAGE, in consultation with Claire Creaser of LISU the national research and information centre based at Loughborough University (UK), and Lucy Browse of International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP) have published the results of a research study, Library Value in the Developing World.

The final report has been published and can be downloaded for free here.  Below is a summary of the study and findings, from the SAGE website.

Raising awareness of how the library supports teaching and research staff is key to demonstrating library value in developing countries, concludes a new report published today. The findings are the result of a six-month research study with twelve developing country institutions conducted by SAGE exploring perceptions of the value of academic libraries by teaching and research staff in developing countries. One of my favorite sources, CQ Researcher, is celebrating it’s 90th anniversary!  SAGE is honoring this long standing resource with a new interface and a new feature – Hot Topics.  The Hot Topics section should hit the target for many English Composition research papers.  More from the press release below:

SAGE announces a major partnership with Coursera

SAGE has just announced a partnership with Coursera, a leading massive open online course (MOOC) provider, to make its educational resources available to more than three million Coursera students. Starting today, this partnership grants Coursera instructors the option to supplement their video lectures with SAGE’s wide-range of titles at no cost to students. The partnership is enabled by Chegg, a learning platform selected by Coursera as its exclusive DRM/eReader provider.

The list of Coursera partners is growing and includes a number of university presses (among them University of California, Stanford, and Rutgers). SAGE is one of several new publishers to enter into an agreement with the learning platform (others are expected to be announced today). NSR reached out to SAGE to get more information on what this partnership means for the publisher and the wider education community, including libraries (full press release is available below the Q&A).

Corwin launches ebook platform for Pre K-12 educators

Corwin, an imprint of SAGE Publications specializing in books and multimedia resources for Pre K-12 professionals (including principals, administrators, teachers, and consultants), is launching its new eLibraries product today at the Learning Forward Annual Conference in Boston. eLibraries consists of topic collections of ebooks that provide online access to Corwin’s robust professional development content. The first three topic collections focus on Common Core, Bullying Prevention, and Cultural Proficiency. SAGE license agreements extend access to university alumni

This press release was sent out in early November.  I just now found it in my email.  What great news from SAGE.  We have plenty of faculty who contact us requesting access to databases, journals, and ebooks from our collection.  This will make it so much easier now.  Thanks SAGE!

Los Angeles, CA (November,02  2012) — SAGE today announced a change to its licenses that will provide university alumni with access to the content hosted on the SAGE Journals, SAGE Research Methods and SAGE Knowledge platforms through their university library. All alumni registered with subscribing or purchasing libraries will be able to access all SAGE products including over 645 scholarly and professional journals at no extra fee.

University libraries already support current students and scholars with access to online resources through both on-site and remote services. This new license will extend this offering to alumni via secure authentication, with alumni being authorized by their institutions. SAGE’s growing portfolio

SAGE, independent publisher of journals, textbooks, reference books, and electronic collections for library, education, and professional markets, announced the purchase of primary sources publisher Adam Matthew at the Frankfurt Book Fair last week. This is SAGE’s second acquisition in 14 months, following the purchase of UK-based independent publisher Learning Matters, in August 2011.

Adam Matthew (AM) is known in the library world for its primary source collections in the humanities and social sciencesbest known in the United States for the “American West” collection, which features sources from the Everett D. Graff Collection of Western Americana at the Newberry Library in Chicago. Other AM collections span a range of subjects, comprising everything from medieval travel writing and Victorian popular culture to Chinese society and Jewish life in America. SAGE Knowledge platform launches with 2,500 ebook titles

SAGE and UNC Greensboro partner on open access

It’s interesting to see more academic libraries using funds to subsidize author fees for open access journals. I expect this trend to continue.  Below is another example between SAGE and the University of North Carolina Greensboro, from the press release:

Los Angeles, CA (June 20, 2012) SAGE and the University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNC Greensboro) have announced a partnership designed to encourage social science and humanities faculty and students at the university to publish in SAGE Open. Launched by SAGE in 2011, SAGE Open is the first peer-reviewed, broad-based “Gold” open access social science and humanities journal.

UNC Greensboro will subsidize the author fee for 30 accepted papers to SAGE Open at a discounted rate. SAGE will reach out to UNC Greensboro faculty and students to let them know about the subsidized fees. Additionally, SAGE will handle the billing and accounting for the fees so that it is a seamless transaction for UNC Greensboro authors. SAGE and LISU report on demonstrating library value released

SAGE released the results of a six month research project on demonstrating library value.  More below from the press release.

Los Angeles, CA (18 June, 2012) — Providing evidence of value remains an elusive goal for academic libraries across geographic borders, according to a new report published today.  The findings are the results of a six-month research project commissioned by SAGE, which sets out recommendations for academic libraries to enhance their working relationship with academic teaching and research staff. ‘Working together: evolving value for academic libraries’ was undertaken by LISU, a national research and information centre based in the Department of Information Science at Loughborough University (UK).

Findings from three geographic areas, the United States, United Kingdom and Scandinavia, indicated that there is no systematic evidence of the value of academic libraries for teaching and research staff. Despite this, librarians noted that they receive positive feedback about the support the library provides, but there is a perception that academic staff do not really know how to use all that the library can offer. SAGE Journals now in mobile-optimized format

Los Angeles, CA (February 2, 2012) SAGE’s entire online journal collection is now available in a mobile-optimized format with the help of HighWire Press’ Mobile Web Interface.

Visitors to one of the more than 640 SAGE journal sites using their iPhones, Androids or other smartphones are automatically redirected to the mobile version. The lobbying behind publishing and textbooks – A First Street report

First Street, a new political intelligence product from CQ Press, a division of SAGE Inc., offers a look into the relationships between legislators, lobbyists, and others influencing policy making in the US.  The product launched earlier this year.  They have been releasing topical reports, highlighting the lobbying in the topic area as well as the features of the First Street database.  Alex Bronstein-Moffly, Online Content Manager with First Street recently author a report titled, The Lobbying Behind Publishing and Textbooks.  This report takes a look at the lobbying of the Association of American Publisher’s (AAP) and the National Association of College Stores NACS); issues lobbied in the last few years; and textbook legislation lobbying.

More Content Added to WorldCat Local

From an OCLC Press Release:  In addition to the 200 million records contributed by OCLC member libraries worldwide, 500 million items from leading publishers, aggregators and mass digitization efforts are also now accessible through WorldCat Local.

OCLC has recently added content to WorldCat Local from EBSCO; Gale, part of Cengage Learning; Modern Language Association; ProQuest and the U.S. Department of Energy. There are now more than 400 million articles, 170 million books, 10 million eBooks and 1,100 databases accessible through the WorldCat Local service.

Additional agreements have been signed with ABC-CLIO, American Psychological Association, Association for Computing Machinery, BioMed Central, BioOne, Cambridge University Press, Emerald, IGI Global, Sabinet, Sage, Taylor & Francis and World Bank Publications. Digital Textbooks, an interview with Michele Sordi of SAGE

On Monday I visited SAGE in Thousand Oaks, California and had the chance to talk with Michele Sordi, Vice President and Editorial Director for the Higher Education Group, about digital textbooks.  We discussed the SAGE textbook program, barriers to digital textbook adoption, and the role of librarians in digital textbooks on campus.

Michele will join me, along with Eric Frank of FlatWorld Knowledge and Steve Acker, Research Director for the eTextOhio Project at the ACRL Conference next Spring on a panel, The Digital Textbook Movement: Opportunities and Challenges for Academic Libraries.

SAGE Research Methods Online – Free access to beta until Jan. 2011

SAGE Research Methods Online (SRMO): the essential tool for researchers has been release in beta.  SRMO provides advanced search and discovery tools to support researchers and students as they explore relevant content across the social and behavioral sciences, covering quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods. It was designed by iFactory.

eBook platform comparison chart

I’m not sure how I didn’t find this earlier, but thanks to a colleague, Erik Christopher, I am now aware of the JISC eBook comparison chart. It is available on the JISC site at http://www.jisc-adat.com/adat/adat_ebooks.pl and offers a comparison of up to 7 different eBook platforms including:  Credo Reference, NetLibrary, ebrary, EBL, MyiLibrary, Dawsonera, and Taylor and Francis eBookstore.  Over 50 functional features are compared with basic Y/N responses including search, access control, search results, linking, restrictions, exporting, etc.  All data is supplied by the vendors.  They are obviously missing some reference eBook databases, so I hope Gale, SAGE, ABC-CLIO, Oxford, Rosen, and others can hop on board this chart.  If anyone is shopping for eBook platforms, or if publishers are considering launching an eBook site, this is a great place to go for ideas and industry standard features.

They also offer a comparison chart for scientific databases.

E-Reference Ratings from LJ

LJ just released E-Reference Ratings, “an evaluation of nearly 180 subscription based electronic resources in 14 subject categories.”  Of course, many of these are eBook platforms like Britannica, Credo, GVRL, Oxford, and Sage.   There was no category for eBooks, instead you’ll find them listed under the various subject categories.

Products were reviewed by a team of 8 reference experts and included 7 criteria:  scope, writing, design, linking, bells & whistles, ease of use, value.  Resources were given a star rating, 1 to 4 stars to indicate * poor, ** satisfactory, ***good, ****excellent  A brief paragraph also accompanied each resource.

According to LJ, “Because we know that online resources continually grow and evolvea list of this nature can date quicklyE-Reference Ratings, which made a print debut in the November 15th Reference Announcements issue, will find its permanent home and reach its full potential on our web site. We intend not only to keep up with these ever-changing products (adjusting the ratings as necessary) but also to expand the number of databases in each category and venture into new ones. We hope to hear from all partieslibrarians, publishers, and vendorsabout how we can keep this tool thriving and make it even more useful.”

Congrats LJ!  This was no small feat.�
