OUP -an interview with Colleen Scollans about Bibliographies Online

Last week I was in NYC visiting with the great crew at Oxford University Press.  I got the complete, unedited tour of their new product, Oxford Bibliographies Online.  While there, I had a chance to speak with Colleen Scollans, VP of Sales and Marketing for OUP, about OBO and the user research involved in the formation of the product, and the continuation of the product.  Colleen’s interview is on the NSR interviews page with many other interesting interviews.  Have a listen.  I’ll blog soon about my thoughts on OBO.

This session was directed to publishers who are thinking about digital printing opportunities.  The speakers were obviously pro-digital printing and provided many examples of the benefits of digital printing for publishers.  But, libraries should take note.  Digital printing could be a good source of revenue for libraries who have large digital collections.  I particular like the idea of “chunking”  and creating keepsake books from public domain material (discussed below).  Consortia could purchase a POD machine and member libraries could use this for a variety of projects, just think of the number of digital collections in one consortia.  What great revenue!  The speakers discussed 3 overlapping segments in digital printing- digital printing vendors, onsite services, and author services

Digital printing is more than print on demand (POD).  POD is a strategy in digital printing.

2010 Dartmouth Medal Winners

The Dartmouth Medal, honoring a reference work of outstanding quality and significance, is awarded each year by the Reference and User Services Association, a division of the American Library Association.  This year, 3 titles were honored, one as the Dartmouth Medal winner and two for Honorable Mention.  All 3 multivolume titles are available in ebook format through the publisher’s reference platform.

Oxford University Press chooses PubFactory for Oxford Dictionaries Online

Excited to see that OUP is working with iFactory, and their new platform, PubFactory.  I haven’t seen PubFactory since beta, so I’m anxious to try it out.  Am hoping to get a grand tour via webinar this month, so look for an informal PubFactory review on NSR soon.   Here’s the press release:

Big news in online reference

I’ve gotten a flurry of press releases in the past 2 weeks from a variety of reference publishers.  Some are offering mobile search, others are teaming up to distribute content, or they are offering new products.  Here’s a sampling of what’s going on (in no apparent order):

  • Oxford University Press launched Oxford Handbooks Online
  • SAGE Reference is making nearly 70 of their top Social Science encyclopedias available in Credo Reference
  • Alexander Street Press announced the streaming music and video collections are going mobile in 2010
  • EBSCO Publishing announced the “going mobile” version of EBSCO host
  • Facts on File (Infobase Publishing) launched a new curriculum video on demand subscription service
  • Rosen and Gale have teamed up to distribute one anothers online health resources – Rosen’s Teen Health & Wellness and Gale’s Health & Wellness Resource Center
  • Gale’s Powersearch and InfoTrac now support the MLA 7 format

New Interview with Tom Beyer, iFactory

Getting to grips with developing and managing e-book collections: an introduction

Course Outline
This course opens the door to a new electronic format and is designed to support librarians who are beginning to set up e-book collections. In the last eight years, there has been an unprecedented growth in the publishing of e-books with an increasing array of different types available for all sectors. The programme will give you the opportunity to explore different e-books including a range of commercially-published and free reference works, monographs, textbooks, and fiction. Examples will include individual titles and also collections of e-books, such as those offered by NetLibrary, Credo, MyiLibrary and Oxford University Press. The course will also facilitate consideration of the new opportunities e-books offer for librarians and users in academic, public and special library and information services, and will explore the significant collection management and promotional issues which challenge information and library staff.
The course is designed to offer: *    an understanding of the nature of e-books
*    a familiarity with range of commercially-produced e-books from publishers and aggregators
*    a familiarity with range of free e-books *    an appreciation of the advantages and disadvantages of the medium
*    an appreciation of the collection management issues associated with bibliographical control, selection, acquisition, access, evaluation, licensing, and archiving
*    a familiarity with the different ways of promoting awareness and use of e-books.

In addition to talks by the presenters, the course includes practical exercises. One will allow delegates to explore examples of online e-books in a structured way. Others will comprise activities during which delegates will examine the major collection management, and marketing and promotion issues. Plenary sessions led by the course presenters will be held to enable delegates to  discuss their findings in the light of current research and professional practice.

Course Presenters: Ray Lonsdale and Chris Armstrong
Chris Armstrong and Ray Lonsdale have been working and offering courses in the field of e-books, e-resources and collection management for the past 12 years, both in the UK and abroad. Up until recently, they were members of the Joint Information Systems Committee e-Book Working Group, which has been promoting the publishing and uptake of e-books in further and higher education and sixth form colleges. Ray is Reader in Information Studies at Aberystwyth University and a Director of Information Automation Limited. He has specialised in the field of collection management and, in particular, in the management of electronic collections. Ray has published extensively and has edited several national and international professional and academic journals. Chris runs a consultancy, research and training company, Information Automation Limited, which he set up in 1987. The company specialises in all forms of electronic resources and in electronic publishing, a topic on which Chris has taught a module in the Department in Aberystwyth. Chris is a regular writer, and sits on the editorial boards of three professional journals. He is also a National Councillor of CILIP.

DailyLit – reading your books in small pieces, via email or RSS

Have you heard of DailyLit? – it’s pretty cool.  DailyLit provides small installments of books to users through an email message or RSS feed, daily.  Hey, since it’s not a piece of paper, I consider this an eBook!  It was built on the premise that we don’t have time to read books, but yet we still find time to read email, so they combined the two!

They have over 950 titles either for free or a small access fee.  Many are classics and now, some are provided by none other than Oxford University Press!

It’s easy to set-up a free account and get started.  You can determine how frequently you want the installments delivered, and even choose the time of day.  For my first title, I chose Tom Peter’s 100 Ways to Succeed and Make Money.  My first installment (of 100) was a simple read of 362 words – all about being neat and tidy!

But my next title will definitely be:   Skinny Bitch in the Kitch: Kick-Ass Recipes for Hungry Girls Who Want to Stop Cooking Crap (and Start Looking Hot!)   hmmm.

They have a blog, rating and review area, and plenty of ways for their members (over 125K) to converse.  Check it out.  I’m off to clean my desk 😉
