Self-Publishing Movement Continues Strong Growth in U.S. says Bowker- 2012 ISBNs show nearly 60% more self-published works than in 2011
New Providence, NJ â€“ October 9, 2013 â€“ A new analysis of U.S. ISBN data by ProQuest affiliate Bowker reveals that the number of self-published titles in 2012 jumped to more than 391,000, up 59 percent over 2011 and 422 percent over 2007. Ebooks continue to gain on print, comprising 40 percent of the ISBNs that were self-published in 2012, up from just 11 percent in 2007.
â€œThe most successful self-publishers donâ€™t view themselves as writers only, but as business owners,â€ said Beat Barblan, Bowker Director of Identifier Services. â€œThey invest in their businesses, hiring experts to fill skill gaps and thatâ€™s building a thriving new service infrastructure in publishing.â€
The analysis shows the growing prominence of a handful of companies that offer publishing services to individual authors.Â More than 80 percent of self-published titles came to market with support from just eight companies, including Smashwords and CreateSpace. June 5, 2012 (New Providence, NJ) — Bowker, the global leader in bibliographic information, released its annual report on U. S. print book publishing for 2011, compiled from its Books In PrintÂ® database.Â Based on preliminary figures from U.S. publishers, Bowker is projecting that traditional print book output grew six percent in 2011, from 328,259 titles in 2010 to a projected 347,178 in 2011, driven almost exclusively by a strong self-publishing market. This is the most significant expansion in more than four years for Americaâ€™s traditional publishing sector, but removing self-publishing from the equation would show that the market is relatively flat from 2010.

Received this via email today:Â Bowker released its annual report on U.S. print book publishing, compiled from its Books In PrintÂ® database.Â Based on preliminary figures from U.S. publishers, Bowker is projecting that despite the popularity of e-books, traditional U.S. print title output in 2010 increased 5%.Â Output of new titles and editions increased from 302,410 in 2009 to a projected 316,480 in 2010. The 5% increase comes on the heels of a 4% increase the previous year based on the final 2008-2009 figures.

Bowker has released a new version of Books In Print.Â Â The new Books In Print is visually appealing and easy to navigate; robust for professional use by librarians, booksellers, and publishers, yet easy enough for novice users.Â Even better, ebooks are easier to discover.Â Mark Tullos, MLIS and Senior Product Manager at Bowker, offered some step-by-step instructions on discovering ebooks in print.Â “From the new Books in Print advanced search, the user can enter the keyword in subject for example Â â€œpoliticsâ€, filter by forthcoming, book, and ebook, and receive a list of forthcoming ebooks within that subject. January 11, 2011 (ANN ARBOR, Mich.) â€“ ProQuest will digitize more than 30,000 rare early books from the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB), the National Library of the Netherlands, capturing every volume in high-resolution color scans. This is the third major European national library to participate in ProQuestâ€™s Early European Books project after the Danish Royal Library, Copenhagen and the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze in Italy. As with the agreements in Denmark and Italy, the material will be free to access in the host country. Bowker released a report today on U.S. Book production.Â Among their projections:Â U.S. book production in 2009 remained flat but 2009 was an extraordinary year of growth for “non-traditional” books.Â According to the press release,Â these [non-traditional] books, marketed almost exclusively on the web, are largely on-demand titles produced by reprint houses specializing in public domain works and by presses catering to self-publishers and â€micro-nicheâ€ publications.Â Bowker projects that 764,448 titles were produced that fall outside Bowkerâ€™s traditional publishing and classification definitions.Â This number is a 181% increase over 2008 — which doubled 2007â€™s output â€“ driving total book production over 1,000,000 units for the first time. ”

NSR has a great new interview posted with Andy Weissberg, VP of Identifier Services and Corporate Marketing at Bowker.Â One of Andy’s tasks at Bowker is the ISTC, the International Standard Text Code.Â This interview discusses the ISTC, ISBN, and other standards which relate to the publishing industry (for ordering/selling/tracking) and for libraries.Â It’s a long interview, but well worth the time.Â Caution, lots of Acroynms 😉 During the interview Andy mentions his ALA presentation, which you can see here. Last Friday at the NISO/BISG forum on changing standards I heard a presentation by Andy Weissberg at Bowker on the ISTC standard.Â This standard was adopted in March of 2009 and according to an ISTC press release, “The ISTC system provides a means of uniquely and persistently identifying textual works in information systems, and facilitates the exchange of information about such works between publishers, authors and authors associations, collective management organizations, libraries, search engines and others on an international level. The ISTC makes it possible to group products containing the same content, or even in some cases, different content with the same origins, together, optimizing their discoverability in search engines, retail and library cataloging systems.
