Let It Go: Automating Collection Development to Enable Librarian/Patron Collaboration

As library personnel budgets are cut or held steady, and while the number of scholarly and scientific monographs increases from year to year, academic librarians need to find ways to discover and acquire relevant monographs more efficiently. To make the situation more complex, the research and information management skills of these librarians are often needed throughout the university, not only to assist students and faculty in research, but to create and manage information workflows that will streamline the research process so that researchers can focus on making new discoveries rather than on managing a multitude of documents and files across multiple platforms. This requires librarians to learn new skills, as well as to spend most of their time away from collection management tasks.

This article presents brief case studies based upon conversations with and published papers by working collection development librarians at universities of various sizes that have recently been actively engaged in reevaluating and restructuring their monographic discovery and acquisition processes and workflows, while describing the strategies they have found most successful for themselves as they replace firm ordering with more automated methods, thus freeing librarians for higher level, non-routine work.

Central to all of these strategies, the profiled Approval Plan (AP), in several manifestations, assures that the library receives the books it needs while librarians spend as little time as possible on selection duties. Audiobooks for Building the Most Essential Communication Skill

Audiobooks have long been used in English-speaking countries to support new language acquisition for immigrant students. Their use in English language teaching in places outside these countries is beginning to take hold, now that digitally available audiobooks allow for more accessibility in secondary and university learning situations.

This month The Journal of Language Teaching and Research has published a new and compelling study of the benefits of “Using Audiobooks for Developing Listening Comprehension among Saudi EFL Preparatory Year Students” (Manal Mohamed Khodary Mohamed, Suez Canal University). The literature review noted in its opening paragraph speaks directly to the role of listening skills in communication success:

Listening is considered the most important language skill for achieving effective communication and good academic achievement among learners. It is a highly integrative skill because it is generally the first skill which learners develop (Oxford, 1993; Vandergrift, 1999). It has been emphasized as an essential component in the Second Language Acquisition (SLA) process (Vandergrift, 2003). It has a great role in the construction of language abilities of a Foreign Language (FL) learner (Rost, 2002). It has acknowledged a great importance in FL classrooms (Richards & Renandya, 2002; Rahimi, 2012). The role and importance of listening in SLA exceeds acquiring meaning from sounds because it does not only mean recognizing the sounds but it also involves detecting, conveying and comprehending the information and it allows comprehending the world and creating social relationships among humans (White, 2006). In spite of the importance of listening, it did not get concern in language teaching for many years (Richards & Renandya, 2002; Nation & Newton, 2009). It was the least understood and the most overlooked of the four skills (Nation & Newton, 2009; Wilson, 2008). Moreover, listening is the most difficult task for learners when they begin to learn a FL and it is the most challenging skill to be developed (Berne, 2004; Vandergrift, 2007).

In addition, then, to the experimental design, methodology of analyzing its results, and the reported results, this paper offers a concise introduction to the value of aural competency and how it can be developed through audiobook listening.

Boopsie’s case study with DC Public Library shows patrons prefer mobile access

Boopsie DCPLBoopsie, Inc. has released a case study that explores its collaboration with the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL). The two worked together to develop a customized app that provides access to the library’s services for the system’s users.

From the study: “Since its launch in June 2015, the Library’s customized app has been downloaded over 10,000 times with an average of over 1,000 unique users each month. Feedback provided to librarians indicates that DC Public’s patrons have a preference for leveraging the user-friendly mobile app to connect with their Library.”
